What is it?
The average age of menopause in Australia is 50-52 years. Some women may experience symptoms of perimenopause for several years in the lead up to the final menstrual period as well as once the periods have ceased.
Common symptoms include hot flushes, night sweats, muscle and joint aches, increased headaches, reduced concentration and memory, vaginal dryness and painful intercourse, crawling sensations on the skin and reduced libido. Many women also find that they experience mood changes such as anxiety, depression, irritability and feelings of anger.
Whilst many women will find these symptoms mild, for some women they will cause significant distress and impact their ability to work and function. Fortunately there are several treatment options available to assist with managing symptoms and improving quality of life. At Zest Medical, we have several doctors who have a special interest in women’s health and can offer tailored advice on appropriate management during this time in a woman’s life. We take the time to explore the different treatment options that are available and can provide the latest information on the benefits and risks of menopausal hormonal therapy (MHT).
Menopause is also an important time to optimise a woman’s general health and well being and a women’s health appointment will often involve a thorough overall assessment. This will include discussion about available screening programs such as bowel and breast cancer screening and cervical screen testing as well as blood tests to check for cholesterol and diabetes.
Our clinic is located at 234 High Street, Ashburton.
